PRAWNS MASALA ULLARTHU
My aunt makes this. It's really tasty!!. I got the recipe from her and made it when I got back home. If you like spicy dishes , add more pepper to it.
Ingredients
- 1 kg prawns(I have used frozen , tail-on prawns from Costco)
- 2 pieces kokum soaked in water and slit into thin pieces(14 gms.)
- 2 medium sized onion , finely chopped(200 gms.)
- 2 tsp ginger finely chopped
- 3 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala(optional)
- 1/2 tsp fenugreek powder
- 1 tsp pepper powder
- 2 Tbsp oil
- curry leaves
- salt to taste(1-1/2 tsp)
Method
- Chop the onions . I have used a chopper to do this.
- Sauté the onions till the raw smell goes . Then add chopped ginger. Sauté the mixture till it turns slightly brown.
- Now add all spice powders except the garam masala. Add in the curry leaves.
- Sauté for a minute , then add in the soaked and drained kokum and prawns.
- Stir well . Cover and cook on medium-high heat for 7 minutes. No need to stir in between .The prawns will release water and hence wont burn at the bottom. After 7 minutes the prawns will be orange in color and completely cooked. Turn off the stove. Add 1 tsp pepper powder , salt to taste and the garam masala (if using). Stir well. Keep covered for atleast 30 minutes.
- Serve with rice .
- For an authentic kerala taste, add 50 gms. sliced coconut after sauteing the onions , ginger and garlic. Add 1/2 perumjeerakam powder along with the rest of the spices.
- For more gravy, increase the onions to 300 gms. and coriander powder to 1 Tbsp. Saute till the onions are well sauteed with the spice powders and you get a nice blackish brown color to the gravy.
