PRAWNS MASALA ULLARTHU

prawns in onion gravy , kerala style
My aunt makes this. It's really tasty!!. I got the recipe from her and made it when I got back home. If you like spicy dishes , add more pepper to it.
Ingredients
  1. 1 kg prawns(I have used frozen , tail-on prawns from Costco)
  2. 2 pieces kokum soaked in water and slit into thin pieces(14 gms.)
  3. 2 medium sized onion , finely chopped(200 gms.)
  4. 2 tsp ginger finely chopped
  5. 3 tsp chili powder
  6. 1 tsp coriander powder
  7. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  8. 1/2 tsp garam masala(optional)
  9. 1/2 tsp fenugreek powder
  10. 1 tsp pepper powder
  11. 2 Tbsp oil
  12. curry leaves
  13. salt to taste(1-1/2 tsp)

Method
  • Chop the onions  . I have used a chopper to do this.

  • Wash and drain the prawns and keep aside.

  • Heat a  pan on medium-high heat . When warm ,add 2 Tbsp oil , when the oil is hot , add the chopped onions.

  • Sauté the onions till the raw smell goes . Then add chopped ginger. Sauté the mixture till it turns slightly brown.

  • Now add all spice powders except the garam masala. Add in the curry leaves.

  • Sauté for a minute , then add in the soaked and drained kokum and prawns.

  • Stir well . Cover and cook on medium-high heat for  7 minutes. No need to stir in between .The prawns will release water and hence wont burn at the bottom. After 7 minutes the prawns will be orange in color and completely cooked. Turn off the stove. Add 1 tsp pepper powder , salt to taste and the garam masala (if using). Stir well. Keep covered for atleast 30 minutes.

  • Serve with rice .

NOTES
  • For an authentic kerala taste, add 50 gms. sliced coconut after sauteing the onions , ginger and garlic. Add 1/2 perumjeerakam powder along with the rest of the spices.
  • For more gravy, increase the onions to 300 gms. and coriander powder to 1 Tbsp. Saute till the onions are well sauteed with the spice powders and you get a nice blackish brown color to the gravy.
